Comparing the Montjuïc tours

A Montjuïc tour does not always include the cable car or the castle, so check the inclusions list for both before you book. On this site, only two products take you inside the castle with the cable car included: the Old Town walk with the castle and cable car, and the longer evening tour that adds the dungeons and the Magic Fountain. The e-bike and boat tour includes the funicular and cable car tickets and stops at the castle. The e-bike tour, the private walk and the gardens walk with wine show the castle from outside, and the GoCar drives past it. The cable car ticket on its own is the most booked option by far, but castle entry is not part of it. Every product here gives a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead.

Montjuïc is a hill full of separate sights: a fortress, museums, gardens, the Olympic Ring and the Magic Fountain. The tours sold for it are just as varied. Some walk you up from the Old Town, some ride e-bikes, one hands you the keys of a tiny GPS car, and the most popular product is simply a cable car ticket.

This guide sets all of them side by side: what each includes, how long it takes, how it is rated and who it suits. For the ride itself, read the Montjuïc cable car guide, and for what you see inside the walls, the Montjuïc Castle guide.

The quick answer

Castle inside with cable car included: the Old Town walk with castle and cable car (3.5 hours, 4.7 from 1,085 reviews) and the cable car, castle and Magic Fountain tour (5.5 hours, 4.5 from 223 reviews, dungeons included). Cable car without castle entry: the return ticket (4.5 from 24,818 reviews). E-bike: the castle and viewpoints tour (2.5 hours, castle from outside) or the e-bike, cable car and boat ride (4 hours, funicular and cable car tickets included). Your own guide: the private walk (2 hours, cable car paid on the day, only 16 reviews). Gardens: the walk with a glass of wine (3 hours, castle from outside). Driving: the GoCar (3 hours, drivers 21 and over). Museums: Fundació Joan Miró and Poble Espanyol tickets. History: the Spanish Civil War walk in the Old Town. Cancellation: full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead on every product.

What is the best way to see Montjuïc with a tour?

It depends on what you want from the hill. A guided walk with the cable car is best for the castle and its history, an e-bike tour covers the most ground with the least effort, a private guide suits a slow, personal visit, and a cable car ticket on your own is the most flexible choice.

Think of it in five ways. On foot with a guide, you ride up by funicular and cable car and see the castle properly, as on the Old Town walk with the castle and cable car. By e-bike, you climb without effort and link the Olympic Ring, the Palau Nacional and the viewpoints in one loop. In a GoCar, you drive the park roads yourself with a recorded commentary. With a private guide, you set the pace and ask all the questions you like. With a cable car ticket alone, you plan the day yourself and go into whichever sights you choose.

Whatever you pick, follow the one rule that works on Montjuïc: ride up and walk down. The climb from Plaça d'Espanya or Poble-sec is long and steep in places, while the walk down past the gardens and museums is easy. The homepage has the short version in the tour comparison.

Which Montjuïc tour includes the castle?

Two products on this site take you inside the castle with the cable car included: the Old Town walk with the castle and cable car, and the cable car, castle and Magic Fountain tour. A private castle tour with a guide and castle tickets is also available.

The Old Town walk with the castle and cable car (4.7 from 1,085 reviews, 3.5 hours) starts by La Rambla, passes La Boqueria, the Liceu, Palau Güell and the Raval, then takes the funicular up from Paral·lel and the cable car to the castle for a visit of the fortress and the watchtower views. The cable car, castle and Magic Fountain tour (4.5 from 223 reviews, 5.5 hours) follows a similar route, adds the dungeons, a snack stop with wine or beer, and ends at the fountain on show evenings. If you would rather have a guide to yourself, the private castle tour with cable car (4.7 from 10 reviews, 2.5 hours) includes castle tickets and a return cable car ride.

The rest show the castle from outside or drive past it. Remember what you are visiting: a fortress, not a palace, with walls, a moat garden, bastions and wide views of the port, but no furnished rooms.

How do the Montjuïc tours and tickets compare?

The table sets the eleven products on this site side by side. Cable car means the Telefèric de Montjuïc ticket is included; castle inside means you enter the fortress with the tour.

Should you take an e-bike or a walking tour on Montjuïc?

Take an e-bike tour if you want to cover the whole hill and the city in a few hours without effort. Take a walking tour if the castle visit and its stories matter most, because the walking tours with the cable car go inside and the e-bike tours mostly do not.

The e-bike tour to the castle and viewpoints (4.7 from 460 reviews, 2.5 hours) starts by the Arc de Triomf and rides through Ciutadella Park, past the Columbus Monument, to Plaça d'Espanya, the Olympic Stadium, the Palau Nacional and the Montjuïc viewpoints. The motor does the hill, groups are small, helmets come on request, child seats are available and you keep the bike for an extra hour after the tour. You see the castle from outside.

The e-bike, cable car and boat ride (4.6 from 818 reviews, 4 hours) is the longer mix: from El Raval along Paral·lel, the funicular and cable car up with tickets included, stops at the castle and a viewpoint, the Olympic Ring, then a sailing trip along the coast, the beach and the Gothic Quarter. A walking tour is slower but closer: you hear more history and enter the fortress.

Is a cable car ticket on its own enough for Montjuïc?

For independent travellers, often yes. The return ticket takes you from Parc de Montjuïc up to the castle and back, and you add castle entry or museums as you wish, but it includes no guide and no castle entry.

The Montjuïc cable car return ticket (4.5 from 24,818 reviews) is by far the most booked product here. It is valid for one day on your phone, and on the way down you can hop off at the Mirador de l'Alcalde. To reach the base station, take metro L2 or L3 to Paral·lel and the Funicular de Montjuïc to Parc de Montjuïc, or bus 150 from Plaça d'Espanya. The funicular is an underground train on a regular metro fare and stops halfway up; it does not reach the castle. If you like some commentary, the cable car ticket with an audio guide adds two self-guided audio tours, and the Gothic Quarter walk with the Montjuïc cable car pairs the ride with a short Old Town walk. Neither includes the castle.

Do not mix it up with the Port Cable Car, which crosses the harbour from Barceloneta to Miramar. It is a separate ride with a separate operator and ticket, Miramar is not at the castle, and no product on this site includes it.

Is a private Montjuïc tour better than a group tour?

A private tour is better if you want your own pace and questions, and it costs more per person. A group tour is the better fit if you want the castle visit and both rides included in one booking.

The private Montjuïc walk with a cable car option (4.8 from 16 reviews, 2 hours) meets by the Magic Fountain and covers Plaça d'Espanya, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and MNAC from outside, the Olympic Ring and flame, the handprints outside the Olympic Museum, the Fundació Miró, the castle walls and the Mirador de l'Alcalde. Transport and entries are not included, and the cable car is paid on the day for you and the guide. With only 16 reviews, the rating can still change.

The gardens walk with a glass of wine (4.9 from 22 reviews, 3 hours) is a small, relaxed group: up by funicular from Paral·lel (the metro ticket is yours to buy), through the Joan Brossa gardens to a glass of wine at the Mirador de l'Alcalde, then the castle explained from outside and the Teatre Grec. The group tours with the castle inside are in the table above.

Which Montjuïc tour is best for families?

The e-bike tour with child seats, the cable car ticket and Poble Espanyol suit most families. The GoCar is not for children under 7, and the longer walking tours can feel long for small children.

Children usually love the cable car, and the ride up takes only a few minutes. The Poble Espanyol ticket (4.1 from 3,792 reviews, the lowest rating on the homepage) gives a whole day of replica streets from across Spain, craft workshops with glass, leather and ceramics, and a children's area with giant slides. The Fundació Joan Miró ticket (4.6 from 1,569 reviews) suits older children who like colour and shapes; the museum closes on Mondays except holiday Mondays.

The GoCar drive through the centre and the Olympic Park (4.7 from 159 reviews, 3 hours) is a two-seat mini car with GPS commentary: drivers must be 21 or over, and it is not for children under 7. For teenagers interested in history, the Spanish Civil War walking tour (4.9 from 304 reviews) explains the darkest chapter of the castle: Lluís Companys, President of Catalonia, was executed in the castle moat on 15 October 1940. More ideas for the day are in things to do in Montjuïc.

What should you check before you book a Montjuïc tour?

Check four things in the listing: whether the cable car ticket is included, whether you go inside the castle, where the tour starts, and how long it lasts. Then check the evening plans if the Magic Fountain is part of it.

  • Cable car: the Telefèric de Montjuïc has its own ticket. Some tours include it, some charge it on the day, and some use only the funicular.
  • Castle entry: many tours stop outside the walls. The dungeons, cisterns and the top of the watchtower open only on guided visits.
  • Start point: tours meet by La Rambla, the Arc de Triomf, El Raval, Paral·lel or the Magic Fountain, so allow time to get there.
  • Magic Fountain: shows run only on selected evenings, so an evening tour sees the fountain on show nights only. The Magic Fountain guide has the details.
  • Cancellation: every product here gives a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead.
