The Font Màgica sits at the foot of Montjuïc, between Plaça d'Espanya and the Palau Nacional. On show evenings, jets of water rise and fall to music in changing colours, and the whole avenue fills with people sitting on steps and walls to watch.
This guide covers when the shows run in 2026, where to stand, and how to time a whole day on the hill so it ends at the fountain. For the sights you pass on the way down, see things to do in Montjuïc.
The quick answer
Shows: selected evenings, most nights of the week in summer, a few evenings a week in autumn and winter. October 2026: Thursday to Saturday, 21:00 to 22:00. Each show: about an hour of music and light. Ticket: none; you walk up and watch. Cancellations: single nights can be cancelled for maintenance or weather; check the city's schedule on the day. Getting there: metro L1 or L3 to Espanya, then a short walk up the avenue. Best time for the hill: morning for the castle and gardens, golden hour on the MNAC steps, the fountain after dark. Winter: the castle and the cable car close at 18:00 from November to February. Mondays: MNAC, the Fundació Miró and the Olympic Museum close. Crowds: keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.
What time should you go to Montjuïc?
Go up in the morning for the castle and the gardens, walk down in the afternoon, and be on the MNAC steps for golden hour. On show nights, stay for the Magic Fountain after dark.
Mornings are cooler and quieter on the upper paths, which have little shade in summer. Ride up by funicular and cable car, see the castle, then follow the gardens and museums downhill. The Palau Nacional faces the city, so its steps catch the late light, and the fountain show starts below them once it is dark. If you only have the evening, the cable car, castle and Magic Fountain tour covers the castle in the afternoon and ends at the fountain on show evenings.
| Time of day | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | The castle and the upper gardens | Cooler air, fewer people and clear views of the port |
| Midday | The museums: MNAC, Fundació Miró, CaixaForum | Shade and air conditioning when the paths are hot |
| Afternoon | The walk down past the gardens and the Olympic Ring | Downhill all the way, with the light on the city |
| Golden hour | The MNAC steps and the Mirador de l'Alcalde | Sunset over the city with the Palau Nacional behind you |
| After dark | The Magic Fountain | The show of music and light on selected evenings |
When does the Magic Fountain show run in 2026?
On selected evenings: most nights of the week in summer and only a few evenings a week in autumn and winter. In October 2026 the shows run Thursday to Saturday, from 21:00 to 22:00.
The fountain does not run every night, and the days change through the year. Each show lasts about an hour, with sequences of music, water and light that repeat, so you can arrive a little late and still see plenty. Single nights can be cancelled for maintenance, weather or events, as happened for a few days in April 2026 while the sound system was renewed.
There is no ticket for the fountain; you simply walk up and watch. Check the city's schedule on the day, especially in winter, when the show evenings are fewer. Special shows are also held during La Mercè in September and around Christmas.

An afternoon on the hill that ends at the Magic Fountain: Old Town walk, funicular, cable car, the castle and its dungeons, and a wine or beer stop.

Carles Buïgas designed it for the 1929 International Exhibition. It was switched off from 2022 during the drought, then renovated with LED lighting and a new control system, and came back on for La Mercè in September 2025.
The 1929 exhibition gave Montjuïc the Palau Nacional, the stadium, Poble Espanyol and the fountain, all laid out along the avenue from Plaça d'Espanya. The fountain became one of the city's favourite evening sights. During the drought, the city turned it off, and the pause was used for its first big renovation in more than 30 years. The new lights give brighter, cleaner colours, and the sound system was renewed in spring 2026.
The fountain is only one part of the 1929 legacy around it. The private Montjuïc walk starts right here and explains Plaça d'Espanya, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and MNAC before climbing towards the Olympic Ring.

Where is the best place to watch the fountain?
Stand on the avenue in front of the fountain for the full effect, or climb the steps towards the Palau Nacional for a view from above. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early on summer weekends.
From the front you feel the spray and hear the music clearly. From the steps and terraces higher up, you see the whole pattern of jets with the avenue and the two Venetian towers of Plaça d'Espanya beyond. People sit on the walls and steps all around, so there is room, but the best spots go early.
After the show, walk down the avenue to Plaça d'Espanya and take metro L1 or L3 home. The crowd moves slowly for the first minutes, so there is no need to rush.

Five and a half hours from La Rambla to the fountain: the Raval, funicular and cable car tickets, a castle visit with the dungeons and a snack stop with wine or beer. The fountain is seen on show evenings only. Rated 4.5 from 223 reviews.
Explore the castle and Magic Fountain eveningWhere can you watch the sunset on Montjuïc?
From the MNAC steps or the Mirador de l'Alcalde. From November to February the castle and the cable car close at 18:00, so plan the castle for earlier in the afternoon.
The outdoor steps and terraces in front of the Palau Nacional are open to everyone, whatever the museum hours, and they face the city. The Mirador de l'Alcalde, on the sea side of the hill, looks over the port and the coast; on the way down, the cable car stops there. In summer the castle stays open later, but in winter it closes before sunset.
The gardens walk with a glass of wine pauses at the Mirador de l'Alcalde for a glass of wine above the port and explains the castle from outside. The Old Town walk with the castle and cable car is a good daytime start if you want to be down on the MNAC steps by the evening.

Which season is best for Montjuïc and the fountain?
Late spring and early autumn are the easiest: mild weather and long days. Summer has the most fountain evenings but hot middays, and winter has fewer show nights and earlier closing times.
In summer, see the upper hill in the morning, keep the museums for midday and save your energy for the evening show. In autumn the light is soft and the paths are quieter, with the fountain on a few evenings a week. In winter, the castle and the cable car close at 18:00 from November to February, and the Montjuïc cable car closes for about a month each year, usually in February, for its safety inspection. Bus 150 covers the same route to the castle.
The first weekend of October brings Viu Montjuïc, a culture weekend on 3 and 4 October 2026 with more than 100 activities and open doors across the park. For the ride up in any season, see the Montjuïc cable car guide.

Montjuïc is a relaxed, family-friendly park. As anywhere busy in Barcelona, keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket, especially in the fountain crowds.
- Bags in front: carry a bag that closes, worn in front of you, and keep nothing in back pockets.
- Phones: hold your phone firmly when you film the show, and put it away when you move.
- Meeting point: agree on one with your group before the show, in case you get separated.
- Children: the walls by the avenue are a good, calm place to sit with small children.
- Going home: walk with the crowd towards Plaça d'Espanya and the metro, which is well lit and busy.
If you prefer to see the hill with someone who knows it, the private walk from the Magic Fountain starts right by the fountain in daylight.

Your own guide for two hours from the Magic Fountain: Plaça d'Espanya, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and MNAC from outside, the Olympic Ring, the castle walls and the Mirador de l'Alcalde. Cable car paid on the day. Rated 4.8 from 16 reviews.

Several Montjuïc museums close on Mondays: MNAC, the Fundació Miró and the Olympic Museum. The castle, the cable car and Poble Espanyol open every day.
On a Monday, spend the day outdoors: the castle, the cable car, the gardens, the Mirador de l'Alcalde and the Olympic Ring. CaixaForum and the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion also open daily. The MNAC steps stay open to everyone, so a Monday sunset there works as well as any other. The Fundació Miró opens on holiday Mondays.
In October 2026 there is no fountain show on Mondays, as the shows run Thursday to Saturday. Check the castle's opening times on the castle's own website, and see the Montjuïc Castle guide for the visit itself.
Up by funicular, through the Joan Brossa gardens, and a glass of wine at the Mirador de l'Alcalde above the port, with the castle explained from outside.
